How to Prep for a Spray Tan So It Actually Works

Prep is most of the result. Get this part right and the appointment itself does the rest.

Almost every disappointing spray tan traces back to something that happened, or did not happen, before the appointment rather than anything about the application itself. Prep is not a formality — it is most of the actual work.

Exfoliate the day before

Dead skin cells hold DHA unevenly and slough off faster than the skin underneath, which is exactly how patchy fading happens within days instead of holding evenly. A thorough exfoliation the day before your appointment, focused on elbows, knees, ankles and hands, gives the color a more even surface to develop on.

Skip lotion, oil and deodorant on the day

Anything on your skin the day of your appointment creates a barrier between DHA and skin, which is how you end up with streaks or spots that never took color. That includes ordinary moisturizer, perfume, and deodorant — apply none of it before your session.

Shave beforehand, not after

Shave the day before your appointment, not the day of and never after. Shaving right before opens pores that can cause spotting, and shaving after a fresh tan removes color along with the hair, leaving visible streaks exactly where you shaved.

Wear loose, dark clothing to your appointment

Tight clothing can rub against fresh, undeveloped color and transfer it before it has set. Loose, dark-colored clothing is the safer choice for the ride home.

If you have reacted to a product before, ask about a patch test

Reactions to sunless tanning products are uncommon but not unheard of. If you have had a reaction to a cosmetic or tanning product in the past, mention it when you book — a small patch test ahead of a full appointment is a reasonable way to check.
